How Much Is My Gold Actually Worth? A Bakersfield Jeweler Explains

Every week, someone walks into our shop on Stockdale Hwy with a small bag of gold and the same question: “What’s this actually worth?” After 40+ years of buying gold in Bakersfield, here’s the honest answer — and the simple math anyone can follow.

The three things that determine gold value

1. Karat (purity)

Pure gold is 24 karat. Most jewelry is an alloy: 10K is about 41.7% gold, 14K is about 58.3%, and 18K is about 75%. The karat stamp is usually inside a ring band or on a chain’s clasp. No stamp? A jeweler can test it in seconds.

2. Weight

Gold is priced by weight — typically per gram or per pennyweight. Heavier pieces mean more gold, which is why a chunky class ring often outvalues a delicate chain.

3. The market price

Gold trades on a live global market, and the “spot price” changes daily. Any buyer’s offer starts from that number, adjusted for your item’s purity and weight.

The math, in one line

Weight of gold × purity percentage × today’s price = the metal value of your item. A trustworthy buyer will show you the scale, the karat test, and that calculation — not just quote a mystery number.

What about stones and craftsmanship?

Diamonds and fine gemstones can add value beyond the metal, and some pieces are worth more intact than melted. That’s an advantage of selling to a working jeweler rather than a pawn shop or mail-in service: we recognize when a piece deserves more than scrap price, and we’ll tell you.

Tips before you sell

  • Separate items by karat stamp if you can — it speeds up the evaluation.
  • Don’t clean or polish anything first; it isn’t necessary and can’t hurt or help the value.
  • Get your offer explained, not just announced. If a buyer won’t walk you through it, walk out.
  • There’s never an obligation to accept. A fair buyer won’t pressure you.
