The number one question customers ask at our counter: “How do I keep my jewelry looking like this at home?” The good news is that safe cleaning is simple. The bad news is that some of the most popular internet “hacks” can permanently damage your pieces. After 40+ years at the bench, here’s what Raul actually recommends.
The safe method for most jewelry
For gold, platinum, and diamond jewelry, you need three things: warm water, a few drops of mild dish soap, and a soft toothbrush.
- Soak the piece in warm, soapy water for 15–20 minutes to loosen buildup.
- Gently brush around stones and in crevices with the soft toothbrush — the back of a diamond collects the most grime and matters the most for sparkle.
- Rinse in a bowl of clean water (never over an open drain!) and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
What to never do
- Toothpaste. It’s abrasive and scratches gold and softer stones. Skip it.
- Bleach or chlorine. These attack the alloys in gold and can make prongs brittle. That includes hot tubs and pools — take your rings off first.
- Boiling water on any stone. Thermal shock can crack emeralds, opals, and many treated stones.
- Ultrasonic cleaners at home for anything with soft or treated stones. Emeralds, opals, pearls, and antique pieces should never go in one.
Special cases
Pearls only ever get a soft damp cloth — no soaking, no brushes. Sterling silver tarnishes naturally; a proper silver polishing cloth handles light tarnish, and heavy tarnish is a quick job for us. Antique and heirloom jewelry deserves a professional look before any cleaning, since old settings and closed backs trap moisture.
When to bring it in
Home cleaning removes dirt, but only a professional polish removes the fine scratches that make gold look dull — and every professional cleaning at Lucky’s includes a stone-tightness check under magnification, which has saved more than a few diamonds from being lost. Once a year is the sweet spot for daily-wear rings.
Bring your pieces by Lucky’s Custom Jewelry & Design at 5009 Stockdale Hwy in Bakersfield — a quick professional cleaning is one of the least expensive services we offer, and the difference is night and day.
