From Idea to ‘Yes’: How a Custom Engagement Ring Comes Together

The biggest myth about custom engagement rings is that they’re a luxury reserved for huge budgets. In reality, going custom often costs the same or less than a comparable chain-store ring — because you’re paying the craftsman directly instead of a retail markup. Here’s how the process actually works at our Bakersfield bench.

Step 1: The conversation (week 1)

You bring whatever you have: screenshots, a Pinterest board, your partner’s ring size (or a borrowed ring we can measure), and a budget range. Nothing is too rough — “she loves vintage, hates yellow gold, wears small jewelry” is plenty to start designing from.

Step 2: Stones and metals (weeks 1–2)

The center stone is usually the biggest share of the budget, so we start there. We’ll walk you through the trade-offs between size, cut quality, and clarity in plain English — and where you can save without anyone ever noticing the difference. Family stones are always welcome; resetting an heirloom diamond is one of the most meaningful (and budget-friendly) choices there is.

Step 3: Design and approval (weeks 2–3)

We sketch and refine the design with you until it’s right, and you approve the final design and firm price before fabrication begins. No surprises — that’s the rule.

Step 4: Crafting the ring (weeks 3–5)

The ring is built by hand: the band formed, the setting constructed, the stone set, and the whole piece finished and polished at our own bench in Bakersfield. It’s never outsourced or shipped away.

Step 5: The final fitting

You inspect the ring under magnification with us, and we make any final adjustments. Then the hard part is up to you — the asking.

How far ahead should you start?

Give yourself six to eight weeks before the proposal date for a comfortable timeline. Sooner is possible; ask and we’ll tell you honestly whether your date is realistic.

After the yes

Custom clients come back to design matching wedding bands — often contoured to nest perfectly against the engagement ring — and enjoy free lifetime sizing checks with us.
