Ring Resizing 101: How It Works, What It Costs, and What Can’t Be Resized

An ill-fitting ring lives in a drawer. The good news: resizing is one of the most routine jobs at a jeweler’s bench, and when it’s done well, you’ll never find the joint. Here’s what actually happens to your ring.

Sizing down

The jeweler cuts a small, precisely measured section out of the bottom of the band (the shank), bends the ring back into a perfect circle, and solders the joint. It’s then shaped, filed, and polished until the seam is invisible.

Sizing up

For small increases — up to about half a size — the band can sometimes be carefully stretched. For larger increases, the shank is cut and a matching piece of new metal is soldered in. Matching the alloy’s exact color is where an experienced jeweler earns their keep, especially with rose and white golds.

How many sizes can a ring change?

Most rings can move about two sizes up or down safely. Push beyond that and the band’s proportions and strength start to suffer — though options like a full shank replacement can go further when a ring really matters.

Rings that are tricky (or impossible) to resize

  • Full eternity bands — stones circle the entire band, leaving no bare metal to cut.
  • Tension-set rings — the setting’s pressure is calibrated to the band’s exact dimensions.
  • Some tungsten, titanium, and ceramic rings — these materials can’t be soldered like precious metals.
  • Heavily patterned or engraved bands — resizable, but the pattern may need re-cutting at the joint.

If your ring falls in one of these categories, alternatives like sizing beads, spring inserts, or remaking the band are all on the table — a good jeweler will lay out your options honestly.

Will stones be affected?

They shouldn’t be — protecting and re-checking stones is part of a proper resize. At our bench, every stone is checked for tightness before the ring leaves the shop, and heat-sensitive stones are shielded or removed during soldering.

What does resizing cost?

It varies with the metal, the size change, and the setting, which is why we quote every job in person, for free, before starting. Most simple resizes are surprisingly affordable — far less than replacing a ring you already love.
