Inheriting jewelry is bittersweet. The pieces carry someone you love — but they may not carry your style. A brooch that never leaves the box honors no one. After four decades of helping Bakersfield families with exactly this, Raul’s advice is simple: the most respectful thing you can do with inherited jewelry is find a way to actually wear it.
1. Reset the stones into something you’ll wear
This is the classic, and for good reason. Grandma’s diamond moves from a dated setting into a modern engagement ring, a pendant, or a pair of studs. The stone — the part she actually wore — stays; only the frame around it changes. Raul designs the new setting with you and sets the family stones by hand.
2. Melt the gold into a new piece
Broken chains, single earrings, and worn bands can be melted and reborn as a completely new piece — a signet ring from a father’s wedding band is one of the most requested projects at our bench. The metal itself carries the history forward.
3. Divide one piece among family members
A cluster ring or tennis bracelet holds many stones — enough to become several pendants or rings, one for each sibling or grandchild. One heirloom becomes a set of heirlooms.
4. Restore it faithfully
Sometimes the piece is perfect and simply tired. Rebuilding worn prongs, replacing lost stones, and polishing away decades of wear brings it back to the day it was first given. If the original design is the treasure, restoration is the answer.
5. Engrave it with a new chapter
A name, a date, a phrase in a loved one’s handwriting — engraving adds your generation’s mark to the piece without changing what it was. We hand-engrave name plates, pendants, and ring interiors right in the shop.
Where to start
Bring everything in — even the pieces you think are beyond saving. Raul will tell you honestly what each piece is, what it’s worth, and what it could become. Stones and gold you don’t use can go toward the cost of the new piece, so these projects are often far more affordable than people expect.
